Gold Reef City is een themapark in de buurt van Johannesburg, Zuid-Afrika, dat is gevestigd op het terrein van een goudmijn die in 1971 werd gesloten. Alles in de attractie is gebaseerd op een vintage thema dat overeenkomt met de goudkoorts van 1886 die leidde tot de stichting en snelle uitbreiding van de stad Johannesburg. Deze souvenirmunten werden geslagen in de waarden van de oude Zuid-Afrikaanse pond die destijds in het gebied circuleerde.

In Hern's Handbook on South African Tokens door Brian Hearn en Allyn Jacobs (tweede editie, augustus 2009) staat op pagina 110:

"De Gold Reef City Mint was een filiaal van de Zuid-Afrikaanse Munt en produceerde deze stukken als reclamemunten. Hoewel elk stuk een denominatie had, kon er niets mee worden gekocht omdat Zuid-Afrika het Decimale Systeem gebruikte. Er zijn proofsets in koker verkrijgbaar. (Er wordt aangenomen dat er in de beginjaren een 'edelmetalen' set is geproduceerd.

Everything within the attraction based on a vintage theme corresponding to the 1886 gold rush that led to the founding and rapid expansion of the city of Johannesburg. These souvenir tokens were minted in the denominations of the old South African Pound currency that circulated in the area at that time.

Hern's Handbook on South African Tokens by Brian Hearn and Allyn Jacobs (Second Edition, August 2009) states on page 110:

"The Gold Reef City Mint was a branch of the South African Mint and produced these pieces as advertising momentoes. Although each had a denomination nothing could be purchased with these pieces as South Africa was on the Decimal System. Cased proof sets are available. (Various dates exist.) It is believed that in the early years a 'precious metals' set was produced."
